Sugar and Spice explores the coded language of femininity through nostalgia, color, and popular culture. Drawing from vintage illustrations, botanical imagery, and contemporary cartoon references, the work challenges familiar expectations of how girls and women should look, feel, and behave.
Against a soft mint-green background, a delicately dressed girl occupies a world of flowers, cacti, and fragmented imagery. An expressive cartoon character introduces an unexpected note of defiance, disrupting the sweetness of the composition and challenging its nostalgic charm.
The title recalls the familiar childhood rhyme about what little girls are made of, questioning the cultural expectation that femininity should be consistently pretty, pleasant, and agreeable.
