Southwest Pack Square — 1982 is part of The Asheville Collection, a small series reflecting on the visual and cultural history of Asheville, North Carolina. Drawing from archival imagery, the work considers how the city’s identity has been shaped through cycles of change, preservation, and reinterpretation.
The composition centers on a moment in time, where architecture and public space become a record of both presence and transition. Layered imagery and subtle fragmentation disrupt a singular reading, allowing past and present to coexist within the same visual field.
Through shifts in structure and surface, the piece reflects the way place is experienced—accumulated, altered, and continually redefined. As with much of Van Atta’s work, the image resists permanence, instead holding tension between memory and transformation.
