Never Anyone's Number One explores the quiet grief of always arriving second—to love, to memory, and to expectation. Built through successive layers of collage, acrylic, drawing, and resin, the work balances careful composition with intuitive marks. The irregular silhouette rejects the certainty of a traditional rectangle, allowing the edge of the panel to become part of the emotional language of the piece. Rather than containing the story, the form feels as though it has been uncovered from it.
Recurring throughout my work is an interest in how identity is shaped by longing, nostalgia, and the stories we inherit about love and worth. Never Anyone's Number One reflects on the experience of feeling perpetually secondary—never quite chosen, never fully seen—and the quiet resilience required to continue forward anyway.
The translucent resin surface preserves each layer while allowing fragments beneath to remain visible, inviting the viewer to discover new details over time. Like memory itself, some elements emerge immediately while others reveal themselves only through closer looking.
