Ingrid — Original Resin & Mixed Media Portrait
2025 | Acrylic, Resin and Mixed Media on Cradled Wood
A little vintage glamour, a little graphic rebellion, and a face that refuses to be just one thing.
Ingrid is a vibrant, dimensional portrait that combines the bold visual language of Pop Art with an exploration of feminine identity, perception, and the many ways a face can be constructed.
Against a warm pink background, Ingrid's sweeping turquoise-blue hair frames a face assembled from contrasting geometric shapes and unexpected passages of color. Mauve, deep brown, golden yellow, orange, and pale cream intersect across her features, while striking turquoise lips introduce a playful sense of balance.
The portrait recalls the stylized glamour of vintage fashion illustrations, yet its deliberately fragmented construction challenges traditional expectations of beauty and representation. Although the individual elements appear disconnected, they come together to form a recognizable woman whose personality emerges through the interplay of color, shape, and expression.
Originally developed as part of Alissa Van Atta's digital portrait series The Girls, the artwork draws inspiration from the graphic simplicity and visual impact of silkscreen printing. The original flat composition evolved into a physical mixed media artwork through layers of acrylic, resin, and dimensional elements on cradled wood.
This process introduces a subtle sculptural quality to the portrait. The overlapping forms cast delicate shadows, creating visual depth and allowing the relationship between the individual facial elements to shift as the viewer changes position. Ingrid becomes both an image and an object, revealing the tension between graphic flatness and physical dimension.
Unlike a conventional portrait that presents a unified likeness, Ingrid embraces the complexity of a face assembled from distinct visual identities. The contrasting shapes suggest different perspectives existing simultaneously, inviting viewers to consider how easily our understanding of another person can be shaped by what is revealed, concealed, or emphasized.
Part of The Girls collection, Ingrid celebrates individuality and the expressive possibilities of unconventional portraiture. Playful, colorful, and quietly provocative, the artwork asks whether identity is ever as singular and complete as we imagine.
