Chloe — Original Resin & Mixed Media Portrait
2025 | Resin and Mixed Media on Cradled Wood
A little vintage glamour, a little Pop Art rebellion, and a woman who refuses to blend into the wallpaper.
In Chloe, a striking female portrait emerges against a richly patterned backdrop of vintage-inspired florals. Her sweeping golden-yellow hair, pale complexion, dramatically accented eyes, and deep crimson lips create a bold contrast with the muted botanical imagery surrounding her.
Drawing inspiration from the graphic simplicity of silkscreen printing and the expressive visual language of Pop Art, Chloe transforms the familiar conventions of feminine portraiture into an unexpected arrangement of color, shape, and form.
Her exaggerated features recall the carefully constructed glamour of vintage fashion illustrations and beauty advertisements. Yet the deliberately simplified elements of her face challenge traditional expectations of realism, suggesting that identity is something far more complex than the appearance presented to the world.
The nostalgic floral background introduces a second visual conversation. Its traditional decorative pattern evokes domestic interiors, femininity, and the familiar imagery of another era. Against this setting, Chloe's vibrant hair and stylized features command attention, refusing to become merely another decorative element within the composition.
Originally developed within Alissa Van Atta's digital portrait series The Girls, the artwork evolved into a physical, dimensional composition through resin and mixed media on cradled wood. The layering preserves the bold graphic quality of the original design while introducing depth, subtle shadows, and a shifting relationship between its individual elements.
As light interacts with the layered surface, the portrait reveals the distinction between the flatness of the graphic imagery and the physical presence of the materials. This transformation allows the work to exist simultaneously as an image and a sculptural object.
Part of The Girls collection, Chloe explores the relationship between beauty, representation, and individuality. The contrast between vintage ornamentation and contemporary abstraction questions the expectations that surround feminine appearance while celebrating the expressive possibilities of unconventional portraiture.
Bold, playful, and unmistakably feminine, Chloe embraces the beauty of nostalgia without surrendering her individuality to it.
