Chattel Call — Original Feminist Mixed Media Painting
Chattel Call
2022 | Mixed Media on Canvas | Original Painting
Every body. Every woman. Every right worth defending.
In Chattel Call, Alissa Van Atta confronts the erosion of women's rights through a striking juxtaposition of vintage imagery, expressive abstraction, and unapologetically contemporary social commentary.
Against a vibrant field of golden yellow and orange, two contrasting representations of femininity emerge. A woman in a bright pink two-piece swimsuit stands confidently, one hand resting on her hip, while a second, more traditionally dressed figure appears partially obscured by an energetic collision of painterly marks.
The contrast between the two women introduces questions of appearance, identity, and the ways women are expected to present themselves. One figure is visibly exposed, while the other is increasingly concealed. Neither form of presentation offers protection from the larger forces surrounding them.
Loose, expressive passages of rust, coral, and muted red sweep across the composition, interrupting the carefully outlined figures and disrupting the cheerful surface. These gestural interventions suggest erasure, confusion, and the deliberate obscuring of issues that directly affect women's lives.
The painting's title plays on the familiar expression "cattle call," replacing it with chattel, a term historically associated with personal property. The wordplay exposes a disturbing contradiction: women may be celebrated, displayed, idealized, and adorned, yet still find their autonomy challenged by social and political forces.
Created in 2022, Chattel Call reflects a moment of renewed urgency surrounding women's bodily autonomy and the rollback of long-established rights. Its bright colors and nostalgic imagery provide an inviting visual entry point, but beneath the playful composition lies a pointed critique of how readily progress can be reversed.
Part of Van Atta's She's so Vintage collection, the painting challenges viewers to look beyond the reassuring appeal of the past and question the power structures that continue to shape women's experiences in the present.
Bold, irreverent, and deliberately uncomfortable beneath its cheerful surface, Chattel Call is a reminder that women's rights are not ornamental, negotiable, or guaranteed.
