An exploration of identity, presence, and the power of being seen and heard.
As We Speak is an original contemporary figurative painting by Alissa Van Atta examining identity, representation, and the relationship between individuality and cultural perception.
A striking female portrait emerges from a vibrant composition of electric yellow, saturated red, and rhythmic polka-dot patterns. Her carefully rendered face and hand, executed with delicate charcoal detail, contrast with the bold acrylic color and graphic elements surrounding her.
The figure's direct gaze and contemplative gesture establish an immediate connection with the viewer. Confident yet introspective, her expression suggests an individual who is fully present, aware of being observed, and unwilling to be reduced to a singular interpretation.
Drawing upon the visual language of Pop Art, advertising, and Ben-Day dot patterns, the composition explores the intersection of personal identity and cultural representation. The dramatic silhouette of her hair becomes both an expressive visual element and a celebration of individuality, while the repeated dots introduce a tension between decorative surface and psychological depth.
The title, As We Speak, suggests immediacy, communication, and the ongoing negotiation of identity. It invites consideration of whose voices are heard, whose perspectives are acknowledged, and how women claim space within contemporary visual culture.
Part of Van Atta's She's a Mess series, As We Speak reflects her ongoing investigation into femininity, visibility, power, and self-definition.
Bold, graphic, and psychologically engaging, this original painting commands attention while encouraging a deeper conversation about representation and the complexities of being seen.
