Adeline — Original Resin & Mixed Media Portrait
2025 | Resin and Mixed Media on Cradled Wood
A familiar face, an unfamiliar arrangement, and a little vintage nostalgia turned wonderfully upside down.
In Adeline, a stylized female portrait emerges against a delicate floral background reminiscent of traditional wallpaper. Her sleek black hair, expressive dark eyes, and dramatically fragmented features create a striking contrast with the soft, nostalgic pattern surrounding her.
Bold passages of yellow, coral, orange, pink, and chartreuse interrupt the familiar structure of her face, transforming a conventional portrait into a playful exploration of beauty, identity, and perception. Individual shapes overlap and interact, creating a woman who appears simultaneously recognizable and abstract.
Part of Alissa Van Atta's The Girls collection, Adeline draws upon the graphic simplicity of Pop Art and the bold visual language of silkscreen-inspired portraiture. The composition embraces exaggerated color relationships and simplified forms, challenging the expectation that a face must be represented realistically to convey personality and individuality.
The work gains additional complexity through its construction in resin and mixed media. Layered elements introduce physical depth and subtle shadows, allowing light to interact with the surface and shift the relationships between its individual components. What initially appears to be a flat, graphic portrait reveals itself as a dimensional sculptural artwork.
The vintage floral background introduces another visual conversation. Its traditional decorative pattern evokes domestic interiors, nostalgia, and familiar ideas of femininity, while Adeline's unconventional face resists the polished ideals often associated with those environments.
There is a compelling tension between the familiar and the unexpected: old-fashioned floral imagery surrounding a woman whose features refuse to follow conventional rules. She exists comfortably between eras, borrowing from the past without allowing it to define her.
Bold yet intimate, playful yet thought-provoking, Adeline explores how female identity is constructed, interpreted, and represented. Her fragmented features invite the viewer to reconsider conventional beauty while celebrating the individuality that emerges when familiar forms are rearranged.
